Course Description

If you already have some knowledge of SQL and are able to write basic queries, take your knowledge to the next level!

This intermediate SQL course will give you more advanced techniques to handle your data at scale and allow you to create data pipelines.

This is highly focused on hands-on practice over theory. Ideal to accelerate your learning.

By the end of the day, you will be able to write full SQL scripts taking data, transforming it and storing it back, allowing you to go through the entire ETL process.

Objectives

This course teaches participants the following skills:

  • Using window functions in SQL for calculations across rows of data
  • Subqueries (nested queries)
  • Using JOINs and UNIONs with subqueries
  • Creating data manipulation scripts
  • Creating your own database

This class is suitable for:

  • Participants with a base knowledge of SQL
  • Professionals who work with analytics teams
  • Professionals looking to upskill in another data tool

Prerequisites

To get the most out of this course, participants should have:

  • Windows or Mac laptop with at least 8GB RAM
  • Base SQL knowledge such as:
  1. SELECT FROM WHERE GROUP BY ORDER BY LIMIT
  2. INNER JOIN, LEFT JOIN, RIGHT JOIN, FULL OUTER JOIN
  3. UNION, UNION ALL

Module 1: Window Functions

  • Understand the use cases for window functions
  • Learn the building blocks of window functions
  • Apply window functions with different aggregations

Module 2: Subqueries

  • Learn how to create subqueries
  • Use subqueries for sequential calculations
  • Use subqueries to filter results
  • Use subqueries to change the level of detail
  • Troubleshoot subqueries

Module 3: Combining subqueries

  • Apply JOINs and UNIONs to subqueries
  • Work with temporary tables

Module 4: Create your own database

  • Introduction to database modelling
  • Follow the database lifecycle
  • Create databases
  • Set up tables
  • Load data
  • Update data
  • Remove data

Module 5: Scripting in SQL

  • Write full scripts for data manipulation
  • Create data pipelines for ETL
